This post is dedicated to one of my best friends, who leaves this week to become a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho.
I can’t believe this week is finally here. The dream we have been talking and fantasizing about for so long. The journey along the way has been difficult, and included more than its fair share of tears, but it’s here. And no one deserves it more than you.
The next time I see you will be when we’re both in Africa again. The Peace Corps couldn’t have placed us farther apart on our beloved continent. They knew we each needed to have our own experience and our own journey – but they also knew it is exactly the place where we both belong. And lucky for us, our countries have some similar attributes for us to bond over – like freezing winters, reliance upon a bucket bath, and wearing long skirts every day.
These next 30 months won’t be easy for either of us… I hate that soon we’ll be more than just a call or a snapchat away. But I am so glad that I can wake up every morning and know that you are living your dream. That you are sharing your light and your joy with the people of Lesotho. And if I ever feel lonely or lost, I can look up at that big African sun and know you’re right there looking up with me. I am so blessed to have a friend like you.
You know I don’t believe in saying goodbye. So instead, I wish you all the luck and love in the world. I can’t wait to join you back on The Continent, and I’m already counting down the days where we’re adventuring together again – next time as RPCVs.
